Welcome to the South West Welfare Benefit Training Centre
The South West Welfare Benefit Training Centre has evolved from the Somerset Welfare Rights Unit (a former project of Citizens Advice). The trainer, Elizabeth Luke, was previously the manager of the welfare rights unit and is a very experienced welfare rights adviser who has been delivering professional delopment training on welfare benefits for six years. Elizabeth is a member of the National Association of Welfare Rights Advisers.
The aim of the service is to provide professional development and suppoprt for professionals assistng clients with welfare benefit advice and/or personal financial management.

Employment and Support Allowance
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) comes into force on 27th October 2008. This new benefit will replace Incapacity Benefit (ICB) and Income Support (IS) for those who are unable to work because of sickness or disability. If you are concerned how this will affect your clients join our course on 12th November 2008 in Langport. Please call for details.

Benefit and Tax Credit rates for 2008/09
These are the benefit rates from April 2008 as announced by the Government. However, if there are any changes following the budget next month these will be amended at that time. There are no details of the rate of benefit for the Work Related and Support Components of the new Employment and Support Allowances which will be introduced in the Autumn - once these have been released they will be added to the table
